Shaped by Divination: A Method for Re-imagining Your Life
Real divination in action and it's world shaping power...A Soul Forge offering
Oracles & Empires
Whether or not you realize it, your life has been shaped by divination to some degree.
Oracle bones thrown by the Ancestors clang upon the Earth in our shared history, setting nomads in motion to seek out new lands, starting wars in pursuit of more resources or in creating new alliances that lead to entirely novel family lines.
Divination was once the purview of shamans, chieftains, and emperors for it directed the flow of entire empires. There are civilizations, races and familial fates forever changed by the words of an oracle.
Just inside Western civilization (which is by no means exhaustive) there was ‘The Oracle at Delphi’.
Emperors such as Nero, Hadrian, Diocletian, and Julian are known to have consulted the oracle, each with differing outcomes. One of the most notable figures of near-imperial Rome to seek the oracle's guidance was Cicero.
Chances are you have family members who have either died or have been saved because of campaigns set in motion by divination.
Human beings have sought direction from the spirit world, and pursued methods of ‘measuring fate’, since time immemorial; we call to the unseen realms seeking guidance, and someone seems to answer.
This tradition is still alive in many places.
Perpetual Exposure
I have been around divination quite literally my entire life.
My grandmother was a ‘world class’ cartomancer.
People would literally travel from China, Africa, Switzerland, and more places besides, to come visit her…all from word of mouth about her skills.
Insane.
She was taught this skill set by gypsy spirit she encountered in an old tavern built into the side of a cave in Spain.
The spirit became her familiar, and taught her in one of the oldest methods of apprenticeship on Earth (spirit teachers and human students).
I had the good fortune of learning from her for most of my childhood, since she raised me in a home bustling with eager people, seeking guidance from ‘the old witch’.
Divination has been a significant shaping influence in my life, deeply rooted in the Afro-Cuban traditions I grew up with.
I would not be who I am today without it.
The Future in a Handbasket
Today most people in Western civilization associate divination with ‘fortune telling’.
In some ways there is nothing wrong with that.
To ‘fortune tell’ is to place a ‘set of actions’ into a ‘predictive algorithm’, to test the most likely outcome.
There is a long history of doing this, and it has tremendous value when responsibly applied by skillful hands and seen with a ‘seers eyes’.
A seer ‘sees’ beyond the wrote definition of cards, or mechanical interpretations, to the underlying pattern shaping the moment itself, reflected in the oracle.
There is an ‘instinct to divine’ that can be found with practice, for it is a part of being human.
Consider that Polynesians would likely not have set out to find the Hawaiian islands without some kind of consultation of the spirits; people in indigenous culture with deeply established shamanic traditions don’t just ‘set out on expeditions’ without some testing likely outcomes.
However...
‘Predicting the future’ is only one aspect of divination, and not necessarily it’s most useful.
One can approach an Oracle with totally different intents, a few of which could be:
Transformation of Consciousness
Understanding More of Reality
Broadening Your Perspective
Finding Blind Spots
Facing Truths You Do Not Want to Face
Tactical and Strategic Information
There are many possible ways to work with oracular technology; however, the primary consideration is to keep it applicable. What makes it useful is when all of this is distilled into actionable advice that changes how you move through the world.
A Watering Down of Fate
What has made divination such a powerful method over the eons?
Divining can offer one a direct doorway to communication spiritual forces that have a vantage point you do not.
In ancient cultures it was understood that diviners were technicians of the sacred, and oracles were mouth pieces for spirits to speak through.
Yet, as is so often the case today...this has been diluted.
People buy oracle decks from Amazon.com, pull them out of the box, and start asking unexamined questions... then do nothing with the answers.
It’s not a criticism, but an observation that apprehends that…that process is a shadow of what it could be.
Outside of cultures with living traditions and those few serious practitioners of magic, finding the skillful use of oracular wisdom is rare.
Consecrated Oracles, Sacred Technicians & Actionable Answers
One of the most important things I learned from my most influential divination teacher, Fabeku Fatunimise, an elder in the Nigerian Ifa and Orisa traditions, is the necessity of:
Consecrated oracles...
That you build intimate relationships with them...
Which offer actionable advice...
Indigenous cultures with established shamanic traditions rarely divine with unconsecrated oracles.
Consecrated oracles are implements specifically connected spirits.
In this way it is not ‘the tarot deck that speaks’, but the spirits they are dedicated to.
It’s no wonder people ‘get readings’, and treat it like more information, instead of something to ‘actually do’.
Furthermore, someone who is serious about this practice ‘gets to know’ their particular oracular method extremely well.
Cartomancy, I Ching, Runes, Bone Oracles...one who is a ‘diviner’, seeks to understand their tools like a technician of the sacred.
And lastly...working with divination in a way that ‘matters’.
If you ask questions, it is because you are going to consider and/or apply the answers.
You think people use to visit the indigenous shamans of their tribe, who throw 300 year old oracle bones, and then treated the information like it’s an Instagram post?
No, the divination itself is a sacred ritual process.
